For the 5th year in a row, The Partnership Plan was honored to support and organize the 5th Grade Theatre Residency Program. This one-of-a-kind Big Impact Grant brings a professional theatre experience into each school in the district for one week, working with 5th grade classes to put on a play.
This year, we brought the grant even closer to home by partnering with the incredible Zephyr Theatre in Stillwater. With the help of three directors, students went from games and auditions on Monday morning to a full production by Friday afternoon. In total, more than 620 5th grade students participated in eleven performances throughout the school year. The phenomenal directors from Zephyr Theatre worked with students to build confidence and stage presence, strengthen communication skills, and discover new ways to express themselves through singing, acting, and teamwork.
“The theatre residency gave students an opportunity to build confidence, collaborate with peers, and express themselves creatively in a supportive environment,” shared Sheryl Gutzman, a teacher at Brookview Elementary. “Students gained confidence, and many were able to try something new—something they never would have done if it wasn't a part of the school day,” said Ann Kindler, a teacher at Rutherford Elementary.
The impact of the program goes far beyond the stage. Students eagerly participated in rehearsals and performances while also reinforcing important academic and social skills such as reading, listening, memorization, and teamwork. Teachers noted that even students who were initially hesitant grew more confident and willing to take risks in a supportive environment.
We'd like to thank the Hugh J. Andersen Foundation for its continued support of this wonderful grant; the teachers and administrators who work diligently to fit this program into their already hectic schedules; the students who took a creative leap and stepped outside their comfort zones for the week; the incredible team of directors from Zephyr Theatre for creating such a safe and encouraging space for our students; and, of course, all of you who continue to support The Partnership Plan's mission of providing exceptional learning experiences for all students.
